Coronavirus: Auckland and Northland to remain at alert level 4

The Prime Minister has revealed Auckland's level 4 lockdown will be extended for another two weeks until 11.59pm on Tuesday 14 September, with a review on Monday 13 September.

Northland - if cases remain as they are - will drop to alert level 3 at 11.59pm this Thursday (2 September).

The rest of the country will move to level 3 - as earlier planned - from 11.59pm tomorrow night for one week, with a review next Monday 6 September.

Level 3 means allowing gatherings to 10 and opening up limited hospitality services, but still prevented large gatherings - including most businesses and schools.

No regional travel is allowed, except for level four who need to travel for work or someone with an exemption.

Today 53 new cases were announced.

The total number of cases in the community is now at 562. Of these, 547 are in Auckland and 15 are in Wellington.

The Ministry of Health is still investigating how Covid was transferred from the New South Wales returnee at the Crowne Plaza into the community.
