The Prime Minister has revealed that Auckland and Coromandel will move into alert level 4 lockdown at 11.59pm tonight for seven days, while the rest of the country will also move into alert level 4 for three days, following a positive case of Covid-19 being detected in the community.

Cabinet was responding with a "hard and early" response to today's Covid-19 news, Jacinda Arden said.

Supermarkets and petrol stations will remain open so there was no need to rush out to get any essential items.

Public venues, such as pools and playgrounds, will be closed.
