Kelly Clarkson puts a soulful country spin on cover of 'Angel of the Morning' by The Pretenders

When it comes to covers, Kelly Clarkson is truly heavenly.

Kicking off Friday's episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the American Idol winner belted out a soulful cover of The Pretenders' 1995 rendition of 'Angel of the Morning.'

For her rendition, the 39-year-old singer showed off her country twang as she sang the soaring chorus, backed by her full band.

The song, originally written by Chip Taylor in 1967, was recorded by many artists including Merrilee Rush, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, Olivia Newton-John, and, most famously, Juice Newton in 1981.

It's also appeared in more than a dozen films and TV shows, including Girl, Interrupted, Jerry Maguire, Modern Family, Charlie’s Angels, The Leftovers and Charlie Wilson’s War.
