Neil Diamond makes rare live appearance to sing 'Sweet Caroline' at Boston Red Sox game

While supporting the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Saturday, legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond treated fans to a rare post-retirement performance of one of his best-loved songs, 'Sweet Caroline'.

Despite the Red Sox being down 10-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals, fans rapturously sang the famous crowd-pleaser - which has been an 8th-inning anthem at Fenway Park since 1997 - with Diamond and actor Will Swenson, who stars in the new musical Neil Diamond: A Beautiful Noise.

The crooner has previously performed his hit song at Fenway in 2010 and again in 2013, days after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Diamond's Fenway appearance was to celebrate the opening of Neil Diamond: A Beautiful Noise at Boston's Emerson Colonial for a six-week residency, after which the show will move to Broadway.

Penned in 1969, 'Sweet Caroline' quickly became one of the 81-year-old's signature tunes and one of his biggest hits.

Diamond retired from touring in 2018 due to his battle with Parkinson's disease, though he continues to remain active in writing, recording and other projects.
