Some people might be surprised to learn that more than three decades ago, Prince first recorded the iconic ballad 'Nothing Compares 2 U.'

Penned by the legendary musician for his side project The Family in 1985, the song didn't receive much notoriety until Irish singer Sinead O'Connor recorded her own version in 1990.

But that didn't stop Prince from treating a crowd of his most dedicated fans to an exceptional performance of his ballad during his concert at his Paisley Park home in Minneapolis on New Year's Eve in 1999.

Bringing the house down with a surprise rendition of the powerful track, Prince launched into the song while seated at his piano.

He then handed over singing duties to his backing singer whilst he jumped into the sea of hands in the crowd as the saxophone solo comes in.

Prince died in 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose at his home. He was 57.
