Just days after it was reported the beloved Australian sitcom Kath & Kim was getting a reboot, it has now been revealed the iconic house used in the series is being demolished this week.

Construction company Dig Dig Demolition confirmed that workers began knocking down the two-storey house in south-east Melbourne on Monday.

Video shot from inside the house show wood and debris strewn across the living room and roof tiles and bricks piled up in the backyard.

The four-bedroom house – located in the fictional suburb of Fountain Lakes on the show, but which actually sits at 4 Lagoon Place, Patterson Lakes – was made famous by the hit sitcom.

The house, which was rented by ABC during the series' run and was affectionately known in the show as "Chateau Kath," last sold in 2016 for $1.485 million.

Kath & Kim ran from 2002 to 2007, starring Jane Turner, Glenn Robbins, Magda Szubanski and Peter Rowsthorn.

The sitcom went on to make two spin-off movies, Da Kath & Kim Code (2005) and Kath and Kimderella (2012).

The sitcom tells the story of a dysfunctional mother and daughter, Kath and Kim, as they navigate life and love in the suburbs of Melbourne.
