Rimutaka Rail Tunnel Celebrates Its 60th Birthday

The Rimutaka rail tunnel may be 60 years old today but its impressive engineering has stood the test of time. The 8.7 kilometre tunnel linking Upper Hutt with Wairarapa was completed a year earlier than expected, despite using old style technology. Rimutaka tunnel enthusiast Graeme Jupp says the solid build means it's the longest tunnel in New Zealand still running scheduled passenger trains. He says maintenance is minimal as it has a solid concrete wall and a hump in the middle to facilitate drainage.
