Scientists have just revealed, drinking red wine is actually good for your health.
Yes! Drinking wine = good health.
The study - which was conducted by Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College London - explored the effect of a range of alcohol on the gut and found that those who drank red wine had increase cut microbiota diversity (a marker of good gut health) and lower levels of obesity and bad cholesterol.
Researchers tested 916 female twins from the UK for the study, comparing those who drank red wine to those who drank beer, cider, spirits and white wine.
And that’s not all, the same was observed across America and Netherlands.
Researchers believe the source of good gut vibes is thanks to the polyphenols in red wine.
Polyphenols are defence chemicals naturally present in many fruits and vegetables which have beneficial properties that fuel microbes.
"Although we observed an association between red wine consumption and the gut microbiota diversity, drinking red wine rarely, such as once every two weeks, seems to be enough to observe an effect," shared Dr Caroline Le Roy.
"If you must choose one alcoholic drink today, red wine is the one to pick as it seems to potentially exert a beneficial effect on you and your gut microbes, which in turn may also help weight and risk of heart disease. However, it is still advised to consume alcohol with moderation."
